Wednesday Sept. 2, 2009 | Charlotte: On the Way to Becoming…?

September 1, 2009 at 10:19 am | Posted in Coming Up | 5 Comments

As an individual, if you don’t have a goal, you won’t achieve it. The same is true of cities. Charlotte has followed a series of plans to reach goals that have resulted in what some say is one of the nation’s most “livable cities.” But we’re also a poster child for urban sprawl and the question is “what are we on the way to becoming?” Last night, in a public conversation, leaders and citizens shared ideas on that subject. Today you’ll hear that conversation.

  1. I listened to the podcast today. Great discussion! I hope to see more of these types of events go on.

Mr. McCrory made a good observation that it’s smarter to build smart from the beginning rather than go back and retrofit things. We need to keep this in mind and have a long-term strategy for our growth, even during tough economic environments.

Walkable, interconnected, well-designed communities with easy access to transit options solve a multitude of problems at once: traffic congestion, pollution, even less obvious results like helping fight obesity and helping low-income and senior citizens obtain more independence. One only needs to look at the South End neighborhood to see how bold, intelligent, transit-based planning can change a neighborhood for the better in a relatively short period.

  2. That was an excellent discussion, and I’m glad the “extra” discussion was posted. I get so incensed when I hear people say “all those busses are just bringing crime to my doorstep!” Its good to hear there is research that clearly debunks that (in my opinion, very racist) myth.

  3. I think that there needs to be a forum like this on what Charlotte- Meck School System is to become. It seems as though more negative than positive is being brought up about it.

    • Jermaine, Thanks for your comment – FYI – WFAE is planning a Public Conversation on education issues, with a focus on CMS, in November. Watch our website and listen to 90.7fm for details!

  4. Good, I was thinking that a forum dedicated specifically to education would be a pretty good topic.
