Wednesday August 18, 2010 | The Catawba Indians

Spanish explorer De Soto first wrote about and named the tribe that would later be known as the Catawba Indians, but the native people he met had lived in our region for centuries. Many of our landmarks are named for the Catawbas and the intersection of Trade and Tryon is said to be an ancient crossroads used by them and other Native Americans. We learn about the first people to live in our region and about the art and culture modern Catawba Indians still create.
