The influence of the London Metropolitan Police model is clearly visible in this 1910 photograph of Charlotte’s law enforcers. The domed hats and blue uniforms, truncheon, and individually numbered badges came from Peel’s reforms.

Reprinted with permission from Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Police, by Ryan L. Sumner on behalf of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Available from the publisher online at http://www.arcadiapublishing.com or by calling 888-313-2665.
