Two officers from the Mecklenburg County police’s river patrol start their patrol of the Catawba River in 1957. Two years later, work began on the dam that would create Lake Norman, flooding homes, family farms, and even whole towns, such as Long Island, a North Mecklenburg community that boasted three textile mills.
