McNeeley’s murder-the city’s second lynching of an African American in three years-prompted Charlotte police to begin building an automobile fleet. Police argued that had cars been available, they might have been able to respond to the scene in time to either save McNeeley or apprehend some of the perpetrators. (CMPD Archives.)
