Thursday January 28, 2010 | Mitchell Gold and Crisis

January 27, 2010 at 11:19 am | Posted in Coming Up | 11 Comments

A conversation about the struggles – religious, social, and psychological – of growing up gay in America. We’ll meet Mitchell Gold, a successful furniture company owner from Alexander County who has put together the stories of 40 people from across the country and their experiences of coming to terms with their sexuality. We’ll talk about the common themes of depression, fear, anxiety and loneliness that appear through the stories and book and how Mr. Gold thinks this book will help gay kids in the future.

  2. I have read Crisis and while not gay do have a mental illness that has been stereotyped by the media and is stigmatized by most of the general population. As such I could often identify with many of the situations described in this book. I just want to thank Mr. Gold for writing a book that I hope will encourage the acceptance of diversity.

  3. the church persecuted Galileo because he said the earth revolved around the sun and there for wasn’t the center of the universe. it was not because the world was flat

  4. Please thank Mitchell …. he is a treasure to this mom who has a beloved gay son …. he speaks the truth so eloquently.

  5. My husband and I were members of a lovely inclusive church in Montgomery, Alabama for several years. I truly felt a divine love as I worshiped with people straight and gay, black and white, young and old. When we moved to NC a few years ago, we searched for a church where everyone is truly welcome and sadly we have yet to find one. Thank you for speaking to ministers and churches and creating the possibility of inclusivity.

  6. Great show and Mr Gold is a brave and honest man. However, you say you are not anti religion but at every point it is religion that poses the problem: with gays, slavery, women, blacks, science, discovery, progress and on and on. At some point we must realize that religion IS a major problem in this world.

  7. Great conversation. All people deserve the right to pursue happiness and to be free. If you have to live a lie, you aren’t happy or free. Mr. Gold is doing a great thing with this book.

  8. 200 years ago, the church burned people at the stake, claiming they were possessed by the devil. These actions were condoned by the government. In hindsight, we are shocked by these primitive attitudes. 200 years from now, people will be shocked once again when they look back at our generation’s evil attitudes toward gays, once again put forth by the faith community and sanctioned by our elected leaders.

  10. Good SHOW!

  11. Telling children that it’s normal and fine for men to put their penus’ into other men’s rectums IS the childmolesting!!!! This is not about the individual person or homophobe! It’s sodomy-phobe. Yes, as Gold says, we’re all God’s children, including the kleptomanics, drug addicts, alcoholics, homosexuals, and every single person with their Id, ego and super-ego – now does the creator want stealing, folks addled-minded from their abuses, sodomy (where feces comes from?)?? This isn’t a question for any of you. Do what you want but insisting that we agree with dick-to-butthole is normal and fine and something to tell children has crossed over. Mitchell Gold IS A CHILD MOLESTER. AND NONE OF YOU PEOPLE CAN DENY IT AND APPARENTLY DON’T WANT TO BECAUSE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE YOUR OWN DEVIANT BEHAVIORS.
