The movie guys are back to talk about the hits and misses for the holiday movie season. The season always brings with it some light comedies and fantasy flicks, but there are also some tearjerkers and epics in the stocking for this Christmas. We’ll take a look at all of them.

Guests
Lawrence Toppman – Film Critic, The Charlotte Observer
Matt Brunson – Film Critic, Creative Loafing
Sean O’Connell – Film Critic, Charlotte Weekly

  1. Funny, I remember great movies that were longer than two hours – Dr. Zhivago and Gone with the Wind come to mind. Now these films would be panned. Do today’s critics have attention span problems or do they just assume the rest of us do?

  2. RE: The Valkyrie movie

“Don’t you dare tell us the ending!!!”

I borrowed a documentary from Netflix called “Killing Hitler: the true story of the Valkyrie
plot”. It is riveting – hopefully the Tom Cruise movie will be too.

  3. I’d like to report how bad I think “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (remake) was. The original was much better technically and the story made more sense. Digital effects were lazy, cheesy, and not credible. Acting was more than wooden, bewidered in an inappropriate way. Jaden Smith is the cutest kid, but this movie is not the place for him. (gratuitous celebrity) The one gem is the brief portrayal of a scientist by elderly John Cleese. I cannot recommend this offering, even if you smoke pot before or during.

I was also appalled by the previews of action films which were lurid and violent enough to disrupt my sensibilities before viewing the feature. Pointless digital effects and competition/tie-ins with violent video games are ruining the American film industry. I recommend the Indies.
