There’s a new Sheriff in town—for the second time in a matter of weeks. We’re joined by newly appointed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sheriff, Chipp Bailey on this edition of Charlotte Talks. The recent controversy over the Sheriff election surrounding Nick Mackey, the announcement that the election was void, and the ultimate appointment of the Sheriff position has been dominating local news of late. Now that the situation has been resolved, Chipp Bailey wants to move forward, begin the healing in our community and start the real work of being a Sheriff. We’ll talk about his 14 years as Chief Deputy Sheriff and what his years under Jim Pendergraph have done to prepare him for his new position. Do you have questions for Sheriff Bailey? Have comments about the whole Sheriff election/ appointment controversy? We want to hear from you!

  1. As a forensic psychologist I’ve had the opportunity to visit many jails around North Carolina and other states.

The Mecklenburg County Jail is by far the most professionally run of the dozens of jails I’ve been inside. The staff is more professional, the security procedures are more sophisticated, and the commanding officers are more aware of important legal and civil rights issues than any other jail I’ve visited.

I hope the citizens of Mecklenburg County realize how good we have it here. Inmates in the jail don’t have it easy by any means. But they are treated as human beings and efforts are made to get them into treatment and vocational programs, which save us a lot of money and make the county safer in the long run.

    Sincerely,

    Mark

  2. Sometimes I forget that I’m in south and it takes issues like this to remind. He is not the rightful sheriff and this injustice is something that could only happen in the south. When you loose an election in the north, you don’t get to re-doit until the powers to be get the result the want. I’m not defending Nick Mackey, but he should be Sheriff; and I’m surprised that you taken the winner side on this issue I hope your fair and have Nick Mackey on also.
