Monday July 27, 2009 | Efficiency of Charitable Organizations
July 24, 2009 at 11:50 am | In Coming Up | 2 Comments
As a part of Mission Possible, we’ll look at the efficiency of charitable organizations. Mecklenburg County aids the homeless, the hungry, the poor and the sick, but so do many private
charities and aid agencies in our region. Our panel of experts will explore the relationship between public and private aid organizations to learn how well they work together, whether they are efficient enough and whether charitable dollars are well spent.
Guests
John Hewett – President, Hewett Consulting
Stacy Lowry – Director, Community Support Services of Mecklenburg County
David Swindell – Director, Ph.D. Program in Public Policy at UNC Charlotte
- WFAE | Charlotte homeless shelters to merge
- Edison Nation Survey | Submit your ideas on how to help Charlotte charities
Charlotte Mission Possible is a joint effort by local media outlets to help Charlotte residents understand the charitable needs of the community and then find ways to help meet those needs. Learn more here.

Dear Mike,
I listened to your show this morning and thought you were asking excellent questions of the guests! I am professional Christian counselor in Private Practice and since I am very specialized, I sometimes need to refer my client sot non profits and county services. Doing so is very difficult for the reasons you stated…no central number or agency. United Way has come the closest with their 211 number but I believe it only refers to other United Way agencies which leaves out a a plethora of other helping resources.
I have been involved in developing a website called RAVE which stands for Religious and Violence E-Learing which is a free training program for pastors to educate them on domestic violence in the church and connect them to community resources. Mike, I have never seen anything like this database that is being build, and I believe this template can be replicated to address the very concerns your raised on your show this morning. The website is http://www.theraveproject.com. Please visit this website which is still being developed but people are actually using it now. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts.
Thank you for what you do and your thoughtful yet direct manner of asking the questions that need to be asked.

P.S. We met years ago in Columbia, SC. Do you remember Marcia Johns, from Semaphore advertising? She was attempting to set us up on a date! She admired you alot.
