We look at the year ahead for the performing arts in our region. We’ll visit with several critics and journalists who follow the arts including theatre, dance, music and the visual arts. From Broadway tours to a major Andy Warhol exhibition, it promises to be a busy year in the arts.

Why did Perry Tannenabum write a criticism of Charlotte Squawks a few weeks before the production even opened? Was he trying intentionally to sabotage the show? If so, doesn’t that violate a primary tenet of critics’ ethics?

I was surprised to hear so much optimism about filling all these new spaces. To talk about Actors Theatre, a fringe theatre, as an example of what can fill these spaces was foolhardy considering they barely have the financial resources to make it year to year.
Let’s face it, Charlotte has no interest in professional theatre. If it did, the REP would still be around or would have been resurrected in one form or another. These new spaces will remain basically empty except for corporate events.
